Why Are Button Placements Different on Men’s and Women’s Shirts?

The placement of buttons on men’s shirts to the right and on women’s shirts to the left is a result of social and cultural norms that have been in place for a very long time. By delving into the reasoning for this configuration, one can gain insight into the historical contexts of fashion and gain a better understanding of the continued use of this convention in contemporary fashion.

When buttons were initially introduced in the 13th century, they were seen as a luxury item, and only wealthy women had the ability to purchase clothing that was embellished with buttons. It was not merely for the purpose of functionality that the choice was made to position buttons on the right side for men and on the left side for women; rather, it was a reflection of societal distinctions that are tied to gender and social rank.

The contrast between high fashion and everyday wear was established during that time period by the fact that common women secured their garments with fabric ties or wooden clasps, whereas middle-class and upper-class women wore elaborate ensembles that were fastened with lavish buttons made from gold, silver, pearls, gemstones, and ivory. This contrast helped to establish the foundation for the dichotomy that exists between the two.

Even though they were dressed by their servants rather than by themselves, wealthy women of the day wore clothing that had buttons. In light of the fact that the majority of people were right-handed, positioning the buttons on the left side made the task easier for the person who was assisting in the process of fastening them. This choice of clothing gently conveyed the message that the family was wealthy, which is a characteristic of the upper-class society.

It is possible that the practice of placing buttons on the right side of men’s clothing originated in military procedures. In light of the fact that the vast majority of men are right-handed, placing the buttons on the right side made it easier to reach concealed weapons.

Throughout history, the act of drawing weapons has primarily involved a movement from left to right during activities such as hunting. As a result, buttons and clasps have been positioned on the right side of the weapon to complement this movement.

Men’s clothing continues to have echoes of its military roots, despite the fact that circumstances have changed. The practice of manipulating buttons with the left hand has persisted through generations of warfare, which has contributed to the enduring tradition of button placement, which is now ingrained in fashion as a norm rather than a necessity.

At the same time that it represents continuity with the past, this time-honored practice also represents an artistic component within the contemporary style. On account of this, the difference in the placement of buttons on shirts worn by men and women continues to exist.
